What is
Sophrology?

Sophrology combines breathing, gentle movement, relaxation, visualisation and meditation to quiet the mind, release tension, and build emotional resilience — helping people overcome the physical, mental and emotional barriers that stand between them and their full potential.

Through short, easy-to-do exercises that can be practised anywhere, anytime, Sophrology offers an empowering toolkit for modern life. The techniques can be used to reset in the moment or built into regular practice to support deeper, long-term transformation.

How does Sophrology work?

Developed over 60 years ago by neuropsychiatrist Dr Alfonso Caycedo, Sophrology is widely used across Europe in medical, educational, corporate and sports settings, and is reimbursed by health insurance in France and Switzerland. It is also taught at major universities and integrated into hospital programmes as part of a holistic approach to wellbeing.

Each Sophrology practice combines exercises and techniques that blend:

  • Breathwork – to calm the nervous system and regulate energy
  • Movement – to release tension and reconnect with the body
  • Visualisation – to build a more positive, focused mindset
  • Meditation – to quiet the mind and create space for self-awareness
  • Relaxation and self-hypnosis – to strengthen emotional resilience and restore balance

From the history of Sophrology to what’s included in your BeSophro membership, here’s everything you need to know about Sophrology.

Sophrology was created more than 60 years ago by psychiatrist and neurologist Dr Alfonso Caycedo. Developed in the medical world, it has been widely practised across Continental Europe — especially in France, Switzerland, Belgium and Spain — in schools, hospitals, workplaces and elite sports environments.

Today, Sophrology is recognised as a trusted wellbeing tool across these countries, often used alongside traditional medical care and reimbursed by health insurance in France and Switzerland.

With millions practising worldwide — and over 11 million followers across online communities — Sophrology continues to grow as a simple, powerful way to manage stress, build resilience, and feel more connected to yourself.

Not at all — the best time is the one that fits naturally into your day.

Some people prefer to practise in the morning to set the tone for the day, while others find it helpful in the evening to unwind and sleep better.

What matters most is consistency. Find a moment that works for you, and try to stick with it each day.

Not at all. This programme is completely beginner-friendly and gently guides you step by step — no previous experience or equipment needed.

BeSophro is the wellbeing app that helps you feel calmer, more energised, and more connected to yourself — through the simple, practical method of Sophrology.
