We’re pleased to share that BeSophro and Dominique Antiglio have been featured in the Daily Star in a new article exploring smartphone use, attention and our connection with the world around us.

The feature, written by Andréa Oldereide, brings together expert perspectives on how our relationship with smartphones can affect the way we direct our attention and engage with our surroundings.

Dominique contributes her perspective as a Sophrologist and founder of BeSophro, discussing the difference between intentionally directing our attention and constantly responding to notifications and digital prompts.

As Dominique explains:

“If our days become filled with constant notifications and scrolling, it means that our attention is ‘always on’ and divided, which is tiring for the brain… Without moments to breathe, recentre, and reconnect with ourselves, it also becomes harder to connect meaningfully with others or read social cues.”

She also highlights that our ability to pay attention to our environment has not disappeared and can be strengthened again:

“I’d say it’s dulling [our instincts] rather than stripping them away. Our instinct to sense danger, read a room or notice another person is still there – it’s just being frequently overridden by a device that’s engineered to hold our attention, and it can be relearned with practice.”

Why this matters to you

  • Reclaiming your attention: Constant notifications and scrolling can leave our attention feeling divided. Creating intentional moments away from our screens gives us space to breathe, recentre and reconnect with ourselves.
  • Being more present in everyday life: Dominique highlights the importance of directing our attention voluntarily rather than always responding to digital prompts. Practices that bring awareness back to the body and our surroundings can help us become more present.
  • Our attention can be retrained: As Dominique explains, our instinct to notice other people and the environment around us is still there. With practice, we can strengthen our ability to consciously choose where we place our attention.
